When I was a child dairy-free Easter Eggs just weren’t available. One memorable year, my brilliant mum made me an Easter Egg using the classic ’70s coconut pyramid recipe. For the first time in years I wasn’t the odd one out without an Easter Egg. Since then multiple dairy-free chocolate brands have appeared and there are even supermarket own brand options available. The recent popularity of plant based eating has increased availability again. Dairy-free chocolate is typically quite dark and rich, while the packaging of dairy-free Easter Eggs isn’t especially appealing for children. So we’ve been around the local shops looking for readily available allergy friendly Easter Eggs and set our kids the task of reviewing them. They didn’t take much persuading!
MooFree Caramel Mini Eggs – 88g

- Eight dark chocolate eggs filled with gooey caramel
- Dairy and gluten-free
- Great taste and texture. Although the chocolate was dark, it was also quite sweet. Our adult testers would have preferred a richer chocolate flavour, but the younger testers loved them.
- Cute packaging appealed to our testers
- Not individually wrapped, so not great for Easter Egg hunts
- £3.75 from Sainsbury’s (£4.26 per 100g)
NOMO Coconut Egg & Bar – 153g

- Milk-chocolate style egg with desiccated coconut and coconut bar (think milk-free Bounty bar)
- Dairy, soya, gluten and nut free ((confusing coconut is seed, not a nut)
- Great texture and taste. The coconut flavour is very obvious, but even the testers who weren’t keen on coconut were quite happy to have a second try.
- Good sized egg that fills the packaging well.
- Quite soft at room temperature. Needs to be keep in the fridge if you like a good crack to your chocolate.
- £8.50 from Sainsburys (£5.56 per 100g)
Choccy Egg & Moofreesas- 135g

- Milk chocolate style egg with biscuit pieces and packet of chocolate covered biscuit balls
- Dairy, soya and gluten free.
- Really good crack at room temperature
- Good chocolatey flavour and texture. Very similar to last year’s office favourite (Nomo Cookie Dough).
- Colourful, fun packing appealed to our younger testers but does have a plastic liner.
- Slightly disappointing size. The picture on the packaging in the actual size.
- £6.95 from Tesco (£5.15 per 100g)
Billy the Choc Bunny (Sainsbury’s) – 80g

- Milk chocolate style hollow bunny
- Dairy and gluten free. Ingredients don’t include nuts or soya
- Great texture and good chocolate flavour. Quite sweet compared to regular milk chocolate.
- The chocolate is quite thick by the bunny is disappointingly small compared to packaging. The picture on the box is life sized.
- £3.75 from Sainsbury’s (£4.69 per 100g)
Honeycomb Choco Egg (Aldi) – 100g

- Milk chocolate style with honeycomb pieces mixed in.
- Dairy, soya and gluten free. Ingredients don’t include nuts
- Good sized egg (bigger than the picture)
- Super sweet with great texture but not a very chocolatey flavour
- £2.99 from Aldi (£2.99 per 100g) – a great price compared to other options
It’s useful to know that most supermarket own brand eggs are produced in the same factory. As you would expect, they all have pretty similar flavours, but do vary wildly in price. The best value for money free from Easter egg we found was the Aldi Honeycomb Chocco egg at £2.99 per 100g, whereas the Sainsbury’s Billy Bunny came in at £4.69 per 100g (although it was one of the office favourites when it came to taste).
MooFree is an independent, family run company and NOMO is a brand name of Kinnerton confectionary who pioneered nut-free confectionary in the UK. Another independent brand that produces dairy-free Easter Eggs is Butterm!lk, but as we couldn’t find any to test in our local supermarket we couldn’t include them in this year’s testing.
